Research interests
My research interests are the development, benchmark and application of numerical methods to simulate seismic wave propagation in 3-D. To solve the wave propagation problem I’m using a Finite-Element approach, the so called discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method. The DG method allows simulating earthquakes in complex and very heterogeneous 3-D Earth models, because it can make use of unstructured tetrahedral grids and a local spatial and temporal adaptivity. Therefore, I exploit the capabilities of the DG method to model seismic wave propagation from a local scale like seismic tunnel modeling towards regional and global scale earthquake simulations, taking into account as much structural and compositional complexity of the Earth as possible. The goal of my work is to utilize the flexibility of the DG method to provide a numerical tool and a workflow to model wave propagation using unstructured tetrahedral meshes in complex media.
